A professional in Japanese dance will hold a class in February at The Medium in Springdale.
The Butoh Dance Theatre Workshop is a program that teaches people about the art of butoh, a dance genre founded by Tatsumi Hijakata and Kazuo Ohno in Japan during the early 1960s. The style of movement incorporates elements of imagination, transformation, and nature to create an original dance form. The practice helps dancers develop a deeper sense of awareness and helps them feel more connected to the environment and other people.
The instructor for the workshop is Master Butoh Artist Vangeline France, an experienced choreographer who works as the artistic director for Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute. She also founded the New York Butoh Institute Festival and was involved with creating the Dream a Dream Project. France has taught at several universities, including Cornell, New York, and Princeton. She even wrote Butoh: Cradling Empty Space.
The workshop will be held on Saturday, February 11 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. France's performance will begin at 8:00 pm. There will also be a second part of the class that takes place at CACHE Studios in Bentonville on Sunday, February 12. Tickets to attend the workshop cost $110, and admission to the performance is $20 per person. Professional dancers who hold lessons like this may use business card printing to share their contact details with students.
