A bit of history
Archaeologists believe the area that became Springdale has been inhabited for approximately 12,000 years. The earliest people were drawn by the area's natural resources, and later, the Osage Indians hunted here. In 1828, settlers of European descent were moved in, subsequent to the Cherokee Treaty.
A small community grew around the Shiloh Regular Baptist Church in 1840, and was called “Shiloh.” By 1872, the settlement was large enough to require their first postal service, but there was already another “Shiloh” in the state, so a local resident suggested the growing settlement be called “Springs in the Dale,” after the many local springs. That became Springdale, and the town was incorporated in 1878. This was the start of postal communication and the first letter printing followed soon after.
One of the many attractions in Springdale is the city's Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. Here, visitors can learn about the history of Springdale, and of the surrounding area. Growth of industry
Early in the 20th century, farmers began working with poultry, with the result that by the end of the Second World War, raising poultry was the most prosperous industry in the region. Tyson Foods was established here, and today is the world's biggest producer of protein foods. Tyson is still in Springdale today.
As the industry grew, the need for transport grew with it, and Harvey Jones started the trucking company that bore his name: Jones Truck Lines. He bought his first truck in 1920, and by 1963, Jones served eight states with 21 terminals. The company continued to grow, adding runs to Nebraska, Colorado, Georgia and Alabama. Jones sold his company in 1980, but the property that housed the first terminal in Springdale is now the Jones Center, and is used for recreation and education.
These two successful companies are only part of the economic base of Springdale, but their success is likely due in part to their organization and efficiency, and printing companies play a part in this.
