Jazzing it up in Anchorage

Jazz fans have a treat coming, with a jazz concert on the Anchorage calendar.

The John Damberg Latin Jazz Quintet will appear in a performance featuring compositions by Mark Manners and John Damberg, who are both Alaskan composers. They are planning to play Trinidadian, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban music in a program they have designed for this event in particular.

John Damberg leads the group and plays steel drum and marimba, while Karl Pasch is on clarinet. Mark Manners is an expert guitarist, and Bob Andrews will support the group with his bass. Rounding out the quintet is drummer Cameron Cartland.

The group plans to play Calypso and Soca numbers from Trinidad; the Cha-Cha, Mambo, and Songo, all from Cuba; and Baion, Bossa Nova, and Samba tunes from Brazil. The evening will give audience members a taste of the many different types of music found throughout Latin America. Poster printing is often used when events like this are planned, as fans enjoy having mementos.

Review of the group include a rave from a member of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, and comments from several music teachers, thanking the group for performing at various schools, encouraging students' interest in learning more about music.

The concert begins at 4:30 pm, and is planned to finish at 6:00 pm tomorrow, October 6. The venue is the Anchorage Lutheran Church on N Street.
