After having been postponed, a popular musical has been rescheduled and will open in Anchorage in the new year.
“The King and I,” by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II is on the way. The original opened on Broadway in 1951, with Gertrude Lawrence as Anna Leonowens, a Welsh widow who travels to Siam, where she teaches the children of the King (Yul Brynner). The show ran for three years, and won a Tony for Best Musical.
Lawrence also won for Best Actress, and Brynner took home the Tony for Best Supporting Actor. However, in a quirk of fate, he is the star now most closely associated with the production, and led a national, four-year tour. In 1956, a film version was made, for which he won the Academy Award.
The classic has been revived a number of times, offering a look at a timeless, subtle love story, and featuring songs like “Shall We Dance?” The current production features Angela Baumgardner as Anna, with Pedro Ka'awaloa playing the king.
“The King and I” opens at the Atwood Concert Hall on February 16, 2021, and runs through February 21. Performances are at 7:30 pm on February 16, 17, 18, and 21, and at 8:00 pm on February 19 and 20. There are also two matinees at 2:00 pm on February 20 and 21. Poster printing is often used to advertise events like this.
