Anchorage to celebrate summer solstice with marathon

Anchorage will be organizing a marathon throughout the city in June to honor the summer solstice.

The Anchorage Mayor's Marathon & Half Marathon is an event people can join to compete for awards while traversing through scenic locations in the town. The course will begin at the ConocoPhillips Soccer Stadium and finish at the Delaney Park Strip. Landmarks featured on the route include the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, the University of Alaska Anchorage campus, and Far North Bicentennial Park. Runners should be prepared to run on forested trails, pedestrian pathways, and urban environments.

The race will have multiple aid stations on the course that offer runners water, Gatorade, and pre-packaged snacks. Snacks will also be provided to participants at the finish line. The marathon uses chips located in the athlete's bibs to track the finishing times of all competitors. Walkers are allowed to take part in the marathon, though they will be required to start behind the runners. All participants are highly recommended not to put on headphones during the race.

The event will be held on Saturday, June 18. The marathon will cost $110 to enter, and the half marathon can be entered for $90. Prices will increase after June 15. Organizers for community races similar to this may utilize banner printing to make directional Signs that runners may use as guides.
