Anchorage residents who love animals have a chance to share a special experience with their furry friends.

The Alaska Zoo is offering people a chance to be a “Keeper for a Day,” which will allow them to spend time with the zookeepers and see firsthand what it's like to be part of the life of the facility. Staff members will plan the day's events on behalf of those taking part. They will get a behind-the-scenes look at the snow leopards, brown bears, and tigers, and may find themselves putting meals together or feeding the wolves.

The only zoo in the state, the Alaska Zoo was established in 1969 as the Alaska Children's Zoo, which cared for injured and abandoned wildlife.

The program is designed for participants age 12 and over. Children from age 8 through 11 may take part, but they must be paid participants, and they must be accompanied by a chaperone, who is also a paid participant. Children 7 and under are not allowed to participate in the program, and space is limited to two people per day. Flyer printing can be used to create guides for those taking part in events like this.

The program is ongoing on Mondays and Tuesdays; upcoming dates include February 24 and 25, from 9.30 am until 3.30 pm. The non-refundable tickets are $200 each, and must be purchased a minimum of 48 hours before the desired date.
