Soccer team undertakes recycling for charity

A football club based in East Kilbride has succeeded in generating much needed cash for both Project Gambia and various community projects, via a recycling initiative.

East Kilbride Football Club (EKFC) began to recycle the empty cans of soft drinks used by those involved with the club back in 2012, supported by Every Can Counts.

Throughout this period, more than £3,000 has been raised as a result of the recycling of soft drinks cans amounting to around 15 tonnes. All of the cash generated is put into the charity outreach schemes run by the club.

This helps to pay for football coaching and equipment in the local area and also include Project Gambia: People Feeding People, which is a Scots charity aimed at supplying deaf children in Gambia with resources and food.

To link-up these charity initiatives, EKFC is also now providing Gambia’s Daranka Future Academy with football boots, strips and other essential equipment.

Mike Peden, the club’s coach, told the Daily Record that:

“The Every Can Counts recycling scheme has really worked to not only encourage our players and club visitors to think about the importance of recycling, but to also raise money for fantastic causes.”
