Play park plans for East Kilbride receive funding boost

An ambitious project to transform an area of East Kilbride into a sport, fitness, and play venue has received a significant boost in the form of a cash injection.

The Plans, which would be centred on the Greenhills High Point in the south of the town, look set to receive £145,000 within an overall £250,000 from the council.

This money is a planning gain contribution intended for the development of facilities for recreation in Lanarkshire, and will help fund the first two phases of the project in Greenhills Park, which is the brainchild of CUPI, a youth group.

Jim Docherty, councillor for East Kilbride South, told a reporter from the Daily Record:

“This is a major win for people in Greenhills, and especially for the young people of the area who will now have a brilliant new place to play, with a new all-weather pitch and climbing frame in Greenhills Park, and another multi-use pitch in Laurel Drive.”

CUPI has been running a campaign to try to get facilities for young people in the area improved, which included handing in a petition to Councillor Docherty in 2012, and now the efforts of staff, volunteers, and young people appear to have borne fruit.

Campaigns like this one often make use of flyer printing in East Kilbride and similar areas, to help spread awareness of them to residents.
