A new issue of Scottish literary magazine, The Scottish Review of Books, was distributed from May 15th with The Herald Newspaper, following a redesign by Glasgow design consultancy, Freight. The literary magazine circulates around 320,000 Copies each year and was first launched in 2004. The magazine is a literary heavyweight, like their English equivalents such as The Times Literary Supplement or The London Review of Books.
The redesign by Freight was commissioned as it was felt that the magazine required a refresh. It has been highly successful since its launch but the new design is hoped to make even more improvements. The new design features new typography and it is hoped that this will convey the magazine’s authority in a clearer way. A totally new grid has been used to enable more flexibility in content and it is also able to convey the magazine’s diverse range of content in a better way. Typography and design can really reflect the image of a brand and make a statement about the type of product. Freight has been contracted to produce another three issues of The Scottish Review of Books with all cover illustrations including illustrations designed by students at the Glasgow School of Art.
