Library gives picture of East Kilbrides past

Thanks to a governmental grant, the East Kilbride Heritage Group is staging a photographic display of the area’s past, and local history-hunters still have another few days to catch a glimpse of it.

Having opened at the Central Library on September 4, the exhibit has seen a healthy turnout of interested observers, including some of the people actually pictured in the photos on display. One of those was Walter Simpson, who was one of the then record-breaking 21 children given birth to by his mother, Jean, in 1938.

Encouraging people to take a look at the collection and offer their contributions before it closes at the end of the month, the Heritage Group’s Ken Lawton said:

“There is lots to see and more we would like to hear about.

“So do go along and enjoy the exhibition and do volunteer to give your own fondest memories of life in our town – we want to record these before they are lost and forgotten.”

Residents who feel they have something to contribute to the display can leave their details at the library’s main desk, and a book and video to commemorate the collection are set to be released when it concludes.

With photographs likely to touch a few hearts and kindle a few memories in the area, printing companies in East Kilbride might find themselves called upon to produce replicas of some of the most popular exhibits, with postcard printing always a popular way of converting artworks into distributable, collectable items.
