East Kilbride retail complex set for ice rink makeover

An East Kilbride shopping centre is to get a new multi-million pound ice skating facility.

South Lanarkshire Council will spend £1.5m on revamping the existing ice rink, and owners of the shopping and leisure centres are expected to add to the project with Plans for family restaurants and a gym.

All of the new facilities will operate alongside the centre’s cinema complex.

The redevelopment programme is set to start next year and may be completed by the end of 2015. A number of other significant improvements will also be made to the mall’s public areas.

The announcements follow work undertaken by the East Kilbride Task Force, which comprises representatives from the local council, as well as Business Gateway, Scottish Enterprise, Lanarkshire Enterprise Services, Lanarkshire Chamber of Commerce, and a number of other organisations.

According to the Daily Record, the South Lanarkshire Council leader, Cllr Eddie McAvoy, called the development “fantastic” news for the town, explaining that he expects the facilities to be a success.

Speaking about the existing ice rink, McAvoy said that while it is still well-used – attracting thousands of skaters every year – it is now 25 years old and is in need of refurbishment work. He added that, if approved, the plan safeguards the facility’s future.

Shopping malls often use services such as banner printing, in East Kilbride and other parts of Scotland, on the launch days of new facilities to attract customers and direct foot traffic.

The announcements come in the wake of a number of other important retail openings in the town – including a flagship H&M in Centre West.
