East Kilbride cyclist wins medal

A top cyclist from East Kilbride has ended an injury-ridden season on a high note at this year’s Scottish Cycling Track Championships.

Kyle Johnston, 19, claimed the 80-lap scratch bronze medal, following a close race. Johnston comes from the Calderwood part of the town. He is the current holder of the title East Kilbride Sports Personality of the Year and secured his latest triumph by picking up speed during the final couple of laps to emerge from the rear of the pack.

This event was held in Glasgow’s Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and saw Johnston finish behind Evan Oliphant and Joe Nally. The former represented his country at the Commonwealth Games a decade ago, while the latter competes for the British Cycling Academy.

Further adding to the joy for Johnston was the fact that his medal win came on the same day as his mum’s birthday. Speaking to the Daily Record, the former pupil from St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School stated that he was shattered by the effort required to claim it:

“I pushed my body to the absolute limit and I was totally exhausted. I was very emotional as well. My mum takes me to every race and supports me 100 percent so I wanted to make her birthday extra-special.”
