East Kilbride branches of travel agent are safe

East Kilbride employees of the Thomas Cook travel agency have breathed a collective sigh of relief as it was revealed that the area’s branches will not be closed amid a wave of cutbacks and store closures.

The news has been welcomed by the area’s residents as it is thought that 15 jobs will be saved at the branches in the Princes Mall and the Plaza. Many of the firm’s staff from around the UK will, however, still be hit by the cost-cutting closures.

Thomas Cook is planning to close 195 stores across the UK but it commented that the East Kilbride stores had avoided the cuts because they were so profitable. The company cited rising fuel costs and what they call a 'difficult trading environment' as the reasons for the store closure plan.

Many other high street retailers have fallen victim to the same trading environment and have been forced to close their doors completely, so by making cuts, Thomas Cook hopes to survive.

Travel agents like Thomas Cook often promote the holidays that they sell by working with local brochure printers. East Kilbride is home to reputable printing companies which produce promotional Brochures for a number of industries. Through the combined efforts of cost-saving exercises and successful promotional and marketing campaigns, firms like Thomas Cook look set to survive the currently challenging economic environment.

The two Thomas Cook stores in East Kilbride will continue to trade as normal following the announcement.
