Awards win for bistro in East Kilbride

A bistro based in East Kilbride has shown that it has the recipe for success after it claimed one of the prizes at the prestigious annual Scottish Food Awards ceremony – seeing off a prominent celebrity chef in the process.

Auld Raes is situated in East Kilbride’s Village district and was competing in the category of Best Scottish Cuisine, having been put forward for the award by those who eat there. Among the other nominees was Tom Kitchin, whose restaurant in the capital has earned him Michelin stars and celebrity chef status.

Two major restaurants in Glasgow were also in contention, making the victory for Auld Raes all the more impressive. The bistro opened its doors three years ago and is owned by mother and son Janice and Darren Thomson.

According to the Daily Record, the pair told the local press that both the initial nomination and the progress to the final stages of the competition had astonished them, with Janice going on to add that:

“To beat who we did was just unbelievable – and it’s all down to our fantastic customers in East Kilbride and beyond, which makes it all the more special.”
