Greg Kelly is aged 17 and lives in the Stewartfield area of East Kilbride. He walked away with the crystal trophy and a cheque worth £4,000 as a result of his efforts on the race track. He secured victory by a distance of two metres, with Jordan Charters coming in second and Emily Dagg third.
The teenager achieved his win even though he was back marker – which means that he was required to give a head start to all of the other runners. His winning time in this, the 148th New Year Sprint, was 11.54 seconds.
Making the moment even more special was the fact that his triumph was shown live on television, as it formed part of the sports coverage by ITV and Kelly – who is a member of East Kilbride Athletic Club – told the Daily Record that:
“I surprised myself with how well I ran in the final. Once I got to halfway, I was confident I would go on and win it. All the hard work I’ve put in has paid off.”
