Network Rail warns of long-term disruption around Watford

Network Rail is busying itself with poster printing and other such activities as it seeks to warn travellers about a prolonged spell of disruption around Watford. The issues will arise in May as a result of a large project that will see a major upgrade of rail infrastructure in the area.

The most significant issue will arise from the closure of the line connecting London and Watford over the May Day weekend, but in all there will be eight such closures in the space of a year while work is carried out.

Dyan Crowther, who is Network Rail’s route managing director, pointed out that the section in question is among the busiest in the country, which is precisely why these upgrades need to be carried out. He explained:

“There is never a good time to close the railway but this work is essential to maintain reliable train services for the millions of passengers who travel on this route every year.”

Network Rail says that it is working to provide as much information as possible in a bid to minimise disruption. Train operators will instead provide other routes to and from London. These will take longer, so it is advised that travel is avoided on these dates where possible. Coach services may serve as part of the service during the disruptions.
