Unique exhibition opens in Preston

Those living in Preston are being given the opportunity to explore areas of their city that are often ignored thanks to a brand new photography exhibition.

Entitled ‘We Are Here’, the exhibition is the brainchild of the city’s Foxton Centre. All of the images featured in it were taken using disposable cameras. These were handed out to local people, ranging from pensioners to small children, leading to the creation of over 3,000 photographs.

A nine-strong judging panel then selected 180 images for use in the exhibition and those attending it will be asked to pick 10 favourites, with some of those going on to feature elsewhere.

We Are Here project member, Paul Thurlwell, told Blog Preston that the exhibition was giving residents of the city the opportunity to access the skills and tools needed to express themselves and locate their voices.

“The dual nature of photography as a tool to record fact and as a creative art form, and the power of the still image to communicate and leave a lasting impression whilst shedding light on and raising awareness of important social issues, cannot be underestimated…”

Thurlwell added that this was particularly true in the social media dominated era.

The We Are Here exhibition is open until July 11th. Exhibitions like this one, which is located in Butler Street, often use full colour printing to enhance their work.
