Preston transport hub set for overhaul

Preston’s architecturally significant bus station is set to go through a multi-million pound makeover.

The site was going to be demolished last year, but was saved after the Government marked it as a Grade II listed building.

Around £8m will be set aside for the refurbishment project by Lancashire County Council (LCC). However, considering grants and various other funding sources, the LCC has suggested that up to £15m could be channelled into the redevelopment.

Last month, councillors estimated that the full cost of the refurbishment work could run to £23m.

Speaking about the project, the leader of Preston City Council, Peter Rankin, said the county is in a more favourable position for calling on alternative funding sources.

The LCC reportedly wants to create a modern bus station that presents a warm and comfortable environment for those who use it.

However, the deal has not yet been finalised; an overall decision is expected to be made during a cabinet meeting between the Lancashire County Council and Preston City Council next week.

When councils lay Plans for significant redevelopment work, they tend to publicise concept art using printed materials such as Flyers and Brochures, often produced through modern digital printing in Preston and elsewhere in the country.

According to English Heritage, the site’s Grade II listing – which was awarded in September by the Minister for Culture, Ed Vaizey – will not stand in the way of any changes that need to be made, as long as the site’s architectural significance remains unaltered.

In its present condition, the bus station costs around £300,000 per year to operate.
