Preston to make bid for bridge funding

Preston City Council is poised to make a bid to replace a bridge within the city.

An application to the Transforming Cities Fund will be made in the next month. The bid relates to the closed Old Tram Bridge. Joint working between Preston City Council and Lancashire County Council is seeking a solution to the infrastructure issue. “Lancashire County Council has been inspecting the bridge on the grounds of public safety for a number of years and indeed carrying out repairs.”

Earlier in 2019, engineers discovered over 200 faults with the bridge spanning the River Ribble. The findings led to the indefinite closure of the popular structure.

In the past, there has been some uncertainty about which authority is primarily responsible for sorting out the problem. Legally, the city council is obliged to step up because it owns the bridge.

Some concerns about the Old Tram Bridge were raised back in 2012. This inspection warned that the overall condition of the link between Penwortham and Avenham Park was affected by significant defects.

At that time, experts based at Jacobs UK suggested that replacing the bridge could be a cost-effective way forward. This assessment was based on a recognition that a maintenance-based approach might become too expensive.
