Preston Station on the right track for employment

The chief of a rail company has vowed to create new jobs at Preston train station following a successful takeover bid.

Transport operator FirstGroup recently announced that it was successful in winning the contract to run the West Coast Mainline train service which connects the North West to London. The service was previously run by Virgin Trains, who had put in a bid to keep the contract, but its pitch was unsuccessful and the contract was awarded to FirstGroup.

Following the announcement, the company has been keen to quell any fears of potential job cuts. Vernon Barker, the director of FirstGroup, is working to reassure workers at stations that they have nothing to worry about. In a recent interview, Barker commented:

"We are very keen to take people currently employed in Preston, and have them transferred to us on December 9. We have a history of investing in staff quite contrary to anything you have read in the media.”

Barker said he was also keen to extend the number of people in the FirstGroup workforce. As well as employing drivers and customer service staff, there will be a whole project around timetables and the communication of these. Any changes will need to be communicated in Brochures, leaflets and Posters that are usually produced using full colour printing.

Preston station is set to receive some minor alterations as part of the takeover and the tweaks to the timetables and services being made by FirstGroup include a late night train service between London and Glasgow, which will also stop in Preston.
