Preston goes punk

The 1980s cult band The Nightingales are due to play a gig in Preston at the beginning of August, along with some special guests.

This outfit emerged in 1979 out of the defunct Brummie group, the Prefects. Built around the vocalist and songwriter Robert Lloyd and promoted by John Peel, they developed a cult status amongst their fans.

The band released several well-received singles and a trilogy of LPs along with a selection of radio recordings. They were also involved in touring both headlining and in support of the likes of Nico.

The Nightingales retired at the end of the 1980s, but reformed in 2004 after reuniting occasionally for gigs in the between years. Their present line-up consists of Robert Lloyd, bassist Andreas Schmid, drummer Fliss Kitson and guitarist James Smith.

They have released a total of eight 7" singles, a 10" EP and eight studio album. Not to mention touring again worldwide, including appearing at festivals.

In 2021 a feature-length Nightingales documentary film 'King Rocker' went on general release. Their latest LP 'The Last Laugh' came out on the TGP label in October 2022.

The support on this occasion is provided by UHR.

Tickets cost £18.70, inclusive of a commission fee. Letterheads can be viewed as a subtle form of business promotion for those engaged in commercial transactions in the music industry.

The Nightingales gig has a starting time of 8pm on Friday, August 4 at The Continental, Preston.
