The structure, which is known locally by the name The Fish Market, was originally built back in the 1900s and is now in a state of serious disrepair, including widespread rusting.
Preston City Council has stated that it will collaborate closely with market traders to make sure that disruption is kept to a minimum throughout the refurbishment process, which will concentrate on problems with the smaller canopy.
The leader of the council, Peter Rankin, told the Lancashire Evening Post that:
“It is work that had to be done anyway; they are wonderful listed structures that have needed a quite considerable amount of work for quite a while.”

Once the refurbishment work has been completed, the canopy will provide outdoor traders with a temporary covering, while construction is ongoing for the redevelopment of the Covered Market next door.
The project’s consultancy team is likely to cost £50,000 to £60,000, with the bill for the actual construction work estimated at approximately £350,000. It will be financed through the City Centre Investment Fund, and is expected to begin later in the year.
