The post-punk outfit The Nightingales, with special guests Vukovar, are due to play a gig in Preston at the beginning of January.
The band was formed in 1979 by ex-members of the defunct group The Prefects. John Robb, in his work titled 'Death to Trad Rock', called them "the misfits' misfits" with an ever-changing line-up, centred on singer/songwriter Robert Lloyd.
In the 1980s, The Nightingales had a loyal following on the pop scene. They put out a host of critically well-received singles and three albums, and performed many sessions for John Peel. There were also the headline tours of Northern Europe and the UK as they supported acts such as Nico and Bo Diddley.
The band effectively gave up working in the late 1980s, but after a few gigs decided to reform in 2004. Various line-ups were tried before they settled on Lloyd plus bass player Andreas Schmid, Fliss Kitson on drums and James Smith on guitar.
Tiny Global issued their last few records, including the 2020 album, ‘Four Against Fate’. This year has seen increased interest in the group due to the release of Stewart Lee/Michael Cummings film featuring Robert Lloyd, ‘King Rocker.’
Tickets cost £12. in advance. Promotional Pens can be an effective way of publicising any rock or pop group.
The Nightingales gig has a starting time of 7:30pm on Thursday, January 6 at The New Continental, Preston.
