Petrol station in Preston could become supermarket

A petrol station located on the edge of Preston, on one of the area’s busiest roads, may be knocked down to be replaced by a brand new supermarket.

The Texaco petrol station is situated in the Broughton district of Preston, with local people knowing it as Broughton Filling Station. A firm of developers now has its eye on the site, due to the fact that demand for petrol in that area is expected to diminish once the Broughton Bypass has been completed next year, as motor traffic through the area falls.

Located close to a pub called the Broughton Inn, the filling station would be demolished and a new commercial unit on two storeys would be built in its place. The Plans for the project released by the developers behind the scheme, Graham Anthony Associates, argue that:

“The applicant has recognised that the alterations to the surrounding highway network will significantly reduce the volume of traffic that passes the existing filling station. Evidently this will have notable negative implications for the existing business.”

The drawings included with the Plans indicate that the supermarket would cover 475 square metres and that parking space for 63 vehicles would also be provided.

Should the supermarket be built, it will be able to turn to leaflet printers to help encourage local people to use it.
