The University of Central Lancashire gave backing to a city centre technical college in Preston during the course of 2014. However, the idea was not translated into reality because of a lack of support from central government. A recent policy statement from Theresa May has led to renewed local optimism because it promised an investment of £170 million in technology-focused institutes. If a college is built in the city, then demand for promotional leaflets in Preston could increase.
Connections between the University of Central Lancashire and other relevant local institutions have been maintained since 2014. This means that a fresh college bid should not be too difficult to put together. Deputy vice-chancellor Dr Lynne Livesey explained:
“We retain strong links with UTCs and the Baker Dearing Trust as well as the networks that put together the proposal for Preston. We remain open to considering future developments and partnerships that could help to meet the needs of pupils and employers alike.”
The former plan envisaged using a building located where Cross Street borders Winckley Square. However, the Guild House is not likely to be chosen as a site if a new bid is made because it is reportedly about to be purchased by a development firm from Manchester.
