Lighting plan for centre of Preston

Part of the centre of Preston could be set to become an illuminating experience for both residents and visitors, if Plans for a number of lighting installations are given the go ahead.

This project has been given the name ‘Illuminate’ and it has been in development for quite some time. The idea is to set up a mix of wall-mounted, canopy and column lighting over an area that is known as the cultural quarter of Preston. This section of the city centre includes the covered market, the Cenotaph and the Harris Museum.

In total, 10 streets within the heart of the city would have these lights added to them. Among them are Anchor Court, Orchard Street, Old Vicarage, Birley Street, Market Street and Friargate. The Plans for the project have now been sent to Preston City Council.

Brochure printing from local shops is one of the options available for promoting new attractions of this kind, to both visitors and people who live within the city.

The documents that have been sent to the council indicate that the lighting will incorporate old-fashioned and modern styles. The retro ones will help to make sure that the installations do not undermine the buildings in the cultural quarter.

Most of the financing for ‘Illuminate’ would be provided by the Towns Fund set up by the government. Preston received £20.9 million funding from this.
