The Plans for the precinct include 45,000 square feet of space for four new shops. The retailers that will occupy this shop space are still to be confirmed, but there has been speculation that one of them may be popular department store John Lewis.
Proposals have been submitted twice before to expand the development, once in 2010 and again last year, but no expansion work was carried out. However, the most recent application looks set to be a success, with planners already working with the council to create better cycling and public transport links to Deepdale. The developers have also made a deal with the council in which they have promised not to open new shops until access has been improved via Blackpool road.
Speaking on behalf of the council's planning committee, councillor Terry Cartwright said:
“This will be the third time an application like this has come before us. I think the residents are becoming quite blasé about it now, but they are hoping something will finally be done on the site.”
Whether or not shopping centre development Plans are seen as being successful often depends on how the retailers that rent space in these centres perform. Many retailers choose to boost their sales using advertising, offers and POS printing.
Preston residents can expect work to start on the Deepdale expansion plan over the coming months and the shopping centre will announce new openings of stores in due course.
