Academic from Preston receives OBE

An academic based in Preston, who specialises in deaf studies and international sign language is to receive an Honorary OBE for the work she does.

Professor Ulrike Zeshan is originally from Germany and has worked at the International Institute for Sign Languages and Deaf Studies (iSLanDS) as Director for a decade.

Zeshan’s institute is located within the University of Central Lancashire, and the Professor has been recognised for services to the global deaf community and higher education.

Her work is primarily centred on analysing and documenting the sign languages of nations outside of the western world, with particular emphasis on rural communities where the language is in danger of falling out of usage.

At the moment she is collaborating with Ugandan, Ghanaian and Indian deaf communities on a project aimed at supporting the development of English literacy there, and she told the Lancashire Evening Post:
“At iSLanDS our mission statement is to pursue world-leading research hand-in-hand with community capacity building. I feel that it is this model that is being recognised first and foremost with the Honorary OBE award.”

Should the organisation wish to promote this award, they can use places providing Stationery printing in the local area to supply them with updated official Stationery.

The medal will be presented to Zeshan during the upcoming months. Honorary awards are given to people who were not born in a Commonwealth or UK nation that has the Queen as head of state.
