Gartree High School has brought in a tortoise by the name of Billy to perform this role. He can regularly be seen strolling along the corridors of the school on Ridge Way, Oadby, wearing his ID card and lanyard. They indicate his job title, but Billy also has a balloon in the shape of a heart on his shell. That ensures that the pupils can spot him at all times.
Schools in the town can turn to local Stationery printers when they need items like lanyards, as well as printed teaching materials.
Talking to BBC News, the school’s learning support head, Helen Collins, stated that the sight of Billy drifting slowly around the corridors had helped pupils to stay calm. She then added that he had become a popular presence at the school:
“He comes into school with me most days and works in the learning support department.”
This whole process was unintentional, as Billy was only at the school initially because he had an appointment with the vet. However, his ability to help pupils who are struggling with work and other types of stress to relax was noticed, and it was decided to make him a permanent fixture.
