Oadby residents now able to loan paintings

Residents of Oadby have been given the opportunity to borrow paintings and other types of artwork, as part of a brand new project that has been set up by Leicestershire County Council.

Oadby and Wigston is the area of the county where the scheme is being trialled. It has been given the name ‘Culture to You’ and involves local people being able to borrow items of their choosing from the collection of a council museum. The idea is to broaden access to artworks that would typically be kept locked away.

It is not an entirely new project though, as there was already a scheme that enabled schools in the county to borrow these artworks. However, it pushes the idea a stage further, by letting people take them home.

When the local council decides to launch initiatives of this kind, poster printing by shops in Oadby is one of the options it has for letting people know about them.

Among those who are benefiting from ‘Culture to You’ are people who are largely confined to their homes. One of them is 82-year-old Marion Poppleton, who has borrowed a painting called ‘The Little Port’.

She stated that it has brightened up her home life by giving her something fresh to gaze at.

The artworks are available to borrow from the council for a maximum six months.
