If residents of Milton Keynes were not already aware that winter is coming, they will be now, as the council begins adding grit to the roads.

The highway team from the council has indicated that it is prepared for even the worst of winter conditions this year, as it is able to monitor any meteorological changes based on information provided by the three weather stations.

Having now begun to apply grit to road surfaces in the town, the council will continue to do so until April, to combat severe ice and frost. Should any be forecast, the contractor responsible for roads in the area, Ringway, will respond by adding salt to those designated as a priority.

Those streets given top status include the main roads, ‘spine’ roads on local housing estates, and certain rural roads – as well as all of the streets providing hospital access and the main bus routes.

Should conditions turn extreme over the winter period, the council will likely be advising people in the area to restrict their journeys to the absolute minimum, and will be able to make use of printing services in Milton Keynes if it wishes to get the word out to people about this.

Authorities are also enlisting the help of local people to keep roads safe this year, by providing hundreds of salt bins at strategic spots in the city, for use on public surfaces.
