Ameida Alhassan from Middleton Primary School came up with the winning idea, which was subsequently turned into a wheelchair for use by paediatric patients at the hospital. Pupils from primary schools produced a total of 130 drawings for the competition, so Ameida faced stiff opposition.
Her design incorporated a padded seat and brightly coloured wheels, which helped to make it the judging panel’s clear favourite. The idea was so popular that the chair was built at no cost by Sunrise Medical and RGK Life.
The competition was the brainchild of Milton Keynes University Hospital’s Marc Yerrell and formed part of the Fab Change Day challenge, which aims to develop innovative ideas for use within the NHS.
Speaking to a reporter from the Milton Keynes Citizen, he stated that:
“The teachers tell me that the students at Middleton haven’t stopped talking about their experiences so I am very pleased all round. The wheelchair looks amazing and I hope it will make things a little nicer for the children in ward 5.”
Hospitals often make use of places that offer full colour printing so that they can make their children’s wards more cheerful for those being treated within them.
