Milton Keynes has submitted its entry to become European Capital of Culture 2023.
The initial phase of the bid from Milton Keynes has a budget amounting to £150,000. However, the town faces stiff competition from Dundee, Nottingham and Leeds, while Derry and Belfast are collaborating on a bid of their own. Marketing services within Milton Keynes could be used to promote the new town.
Milton Keynes is stressing how distinctive it is from some of its competitors. Its bid has the title of ‘Different by Design’ and it is the only new town in the mix. It is a settlement which looks to the future instead of dwelling on Victorian heritage or examples of high culture.
The commitment of Milton Keynes to modernity has been symbolised in its decision to transport its bid documentation to the government via electric vehicles. Two electric cars, named Elsie and Sid, travelled down to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The hope is that the diverse communities of Milton Keynes can get some recognition. Another aspiration is focused on celebrating the trees which make the area into such a green landscape.
If people take the time to take a fresh look at Milton Keynes, they might discover it has more to offer than initially seems to be the case. If the bid was to win the Capital of Culture accolade then a bold initiative involving the grassroots would be taken forward when the time came.
