The teenagers, who all study with the college’s Motor Vehicle department, spent a year working on it, but recently had the opportunity to show off their work to friends and family members at an awards night.
The kart – which they have called The Lawrence Mobil – was created as part of the Fast Forward programme run by Milton Keynes College, which enables youngsters to work on collaborative projects there while they are still attending secondary school. Educational opportunities of this kind are often promoted via the internet and by using the poster printing provided by Print companies in Milton Keynes and other areas.
In the case of Fast Forward, the programme is not simply about getting the chance to race the kart, although the students involved did get to do this at Moggerhanger House Classic Bike Show; it is about teaching English, maths and engineering in a practical way.
Motor Vehicle Technician James Lawrence told the Milton Keynes Citizen:
“Through positive praise, good guidance and mentoring the confidence among the boys flourished. Testing the final product was a real highlight.”
