Abdul Rais lives in Bradwell Common and has suffered from Type 2 Diabetes since 1999, but his diagnosis motivated him to start volunteering in his local community, helping other sufferers manage their condition.
South Asian people are six times more likely to contract this form of diabetes – something that has led Rais to push for greater education about the disease, which can lead to blindness, loss of lower limbs, strokes and kidney failure.
His work also includes campaigning for improved services within Milton Keynes. Diabetes UK’s South East regional manager, Jill Steaton, told the Milton Keynes Citizen that he was a crucial figure within the charity, for both his campaigning and awareness activities.
She went on to add that the Inspire Awards represented a chance for the charity to thank those who give their time and energy, on a volunteer basis, to supporting diabetes sufferers. Steaton commented:
“Our volunteers are our army on the ground working hard in their communities. Our much-needed work wouldn’t be possible without their incredible support.”
