Although the bosses at
the venue were hoping they would be awarded £1.5 million towards it by the Heritage Lottery Fund, they will press on with the £7.5 million construction of two additional galleries regardless.
One of these new rooms will be used to display the town’s Saxon, Roman and Bronze Age archaeological treasures, which were discovered at the time when it was first built.
These fascinating finds have spent close to 50 years in museums outside the town, or locked away within vaults, making those in charge of the museum determined to ensure the expansion happens.
The local council has reaffirmed its commitment to providing over £5 million towards the cost, having worked closely alongside the museum and outside heritage partners throughout the two-year planning period.
LHF opted not to provide a grant, after deciding that it presented high risks, but Bill Griffiths, the museum director, told the Milton Keynes Citizen that it would find ways of raising this cash:
“The museum refurbishment/expansion project is still very much needed for Milton Keynes.”
