The glitzy affair was a far cry from the club where Pete Waterman first saw Rick Astley singing, before inviting him to sign up to his PWL label, with success following swiftly afterwards.
Starting with the single Never Gonna Give You Up, which hit the number one spot in 25 different countries, Astley enjoyed eight top 10 smashes in a row, before deciding to part ways with Waterman.
However, the two were back together for the ball, which was organised as a fundraiser in support of teenagers suffering from cancer. In addition to enlisting the help of celebrities, such events often call on local businesses, such as printing services in Manchester and other areas, to provide services like promotional poster printing.
The 48-year-old Astley got up on stage at the event to sing the songs that made him famous, and the night proved successful, with over £60,000 raised.
Organiser Margo Cornish, who works for Teenage Cancer Trust North West, told the Manchester Evening News:
“We are so pleased that Rick took the time to come and support us at the inaugural north west Teenage Cancer Trust ball.”
The host for the event was David ‘Kid’ Jensen, the ex-Radio One DJ.
