New development gets planning permission
A project which will see a section of the city centre in Manchester undergo redevelopment has received the green light from planners.
The Urban and Civic project will
redevelop the area at the corner of Whitworth Street and Princess Street, in the heart of the city, and won comprehensive backing after a consultation with the public and presentations by Places Matter and Historic England.
It will consist of two buildings offering 238 flats, a four star hotel with 148 bedrooms, commercial office units on the bottom floor, and a landscaped area above the car park at basement level, which will have spaces for 273 vehicles.
The site was originally acquired by Urban and Civic just over a year ago, for £7.8 million, but the plans have since been revised to ensure that the surrounding locale – and historic buildings – is not negatively impacted.
Its executive chairman, Nigel Hugill, told the Manchester Evening News that:
Once the redevelopment has been completed, brochure printers in Manchester may be called upon to showcase it through glossy brochures.
The project is due to get underway by the middle of this year, with people able to start moving in within 20 months.

“We are fully grateful for the support of all concerned. Urban and Civic very much see ourselves as long term investors in Manchester, having built No. 1 Deansgate and Green Quarter in our previous business.”
