What's Happening in Manchester, England…

Life-changing travel cards given to teenagers across Greater Manchester

Free bus-passes are being issued to young people throughout Manchester for use in September.

The new pass is a key component in Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham’s manifesto. At a recent launch event for the passes, Burnham commented on the move:

“I want this to send a very simple message to every single young person growing up in GM (Greater Manchester), I want to say to them that we believe in you, all of you, we’re going to back you, we’re going to help you make your way in the world.”

Those organising major launch events sometimes distribute promotional pens and other giveaways to promote new schemes.

The free travel card, dubbed ‘Our Pass’ has cost an estimated £9 million to date this year. Greater Manchester-based company JD Sports is sponsoring the endeavour, making a considerable contribution towards the ongoing costs as well as providing pass wallets and lanyards.

Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) approved a £9.3 million budget in the earlier part of the year, most of which is already allocated to compensate bus operators involved in the scheme. A further sum of £1 million was recently signed off by the GMCA for operational and delivery costs.

The new passes are currently available for young people in Greater Manchester from ages 16 to 18 and can be made use of from September 2019.
