Leaflets prompt local resident to campaign against tree felling
A leaflet that was recently distributed in the Leigh and Manchester regions has moved a local woman to campaign to save an old oak tree that is due to be felled as part of plans to expand a bus route.
The organisation responsible for public transport in the Manchester region, Transport for Greater Manchester, recently distributed leaflets throughout the region, giving details of plans to expand their bus routes. The leaflets also explained that as part of the expansion programme, several changes to existing features along the route would need to change. These changes were featured in the leaflet – which was produced using digital printing – and include cutting down trees that are in the path of the proposed new route.
Manchester to Leigh is an extremely popular public transport route and expansion to the bus routes between these two places is necessary to cope with public demand. However, not everyone is happy with the changes. Norma Riding is a resident of the Leigh area who received one of the leaflets. The leaflet informed Norma that an old oak tree that is currently near her garden would need to be removed as part of the expansion plans. She said:
Norma now plans to do everything she can to prevent the tree from being cut down and the local council has agreed to avoid removing the tree if at all possible.

“I realise progress is inevitable and if the tree was going to be in the middle of the bus way it would have to be removed – but it is on the outskirts of the route, three feet from my fence."
