Graphene conference set to be in Manchester
A major international conference to discuss the development of graphene is due to be held at the University of Manchester next summer.
Graphene Week 2015 will be the central event in the huge Graphene Flagship research initiative, put together by the European Commission. In excess of 400 scientists from around the world are expected to attend it, which in turn will boost the local economy by around £700,000.
The conference is certain to benefit a variety of businesses in the area, including the likes of Manchester print shops that can supply cutting edge supplies like digital business cards. News that the city had been chosen as a location was accompanied by the further announcement that Manchester has been declared European City of Science.
The Marketing Manchester chief executive, Andrew Stokes, told the Manchester Evening News:
The discovery of graphene – a material which is extremely lightweight but 200 times the strength of steel – was made by professors Kostya Novosolev and Andre Geim a decade ago, while they were based within the University of Manchester. The 2015 event is set to be held from 22nd – 26th June, and will represent the ninth annual graphene conference.
