What's Happening in Manchester, England…

Campaign by Manchester mums saves local centres

A group of parents in Manchester is celebrating following the decision by the local council to reprieve centres for children’s services in three local schools.

The Sure Start provision based within Cadishead Primary School and Fiddler’s Lane Primary School, plus the River View Primary Lower Broughton children’s centre, had been marked down for closure as the council looks for ways to cut its budget by £1 million, but will now remain open in the form of outreach buildings.

The parents with children at the River View School staged a protest recently at the Swinton Civic Centre, and a petition signed by 1,066 people was handed in to the council. Local campaigns of this kind often make use of the poster and banner printing supplied by print companies in Manchester and other areas, to help make their point, and in this case the protest led to a consultation with parents.

Keri Muldoon, who has two kids and lives in Lower Broughton, told the Manchester Evening News:

“This is a great success and as a group we are very pleased. These services are a lifeline. It’s fantastic news because we were expecting the centre to close.”

The budget cuts are set to see four new hubs replace eight centres for children, but having taken on board the concerns of parents, advice, midwifery, baby massages and breastfeeding support will be provided via schools and community buildings in Manchester.
