The City of London is set to get a new sustainably designed block of offices, after Plans for it were approved at a recent meeting of the Planning Applications Sub-Committee.
This tower block will be situated on Gracechurch Street, not far from Aldgate. It will stand at the intersection between that road and Fenchurch Street and will be 33 storeys in height. When the block has been constructed, it will provide total office space of over 50,000 metres in a prime London location.
City of London Corporation’s planning committee opted to approve the project unanimously. Aside from the valuable space for businesses that it will create, another selling point for the project was the innovative sustainable design and construction process.
That will involve the retention and repurposing of materials from the current building on the site. Known as ‘retrofitting’, it cuts back on the carbon footprint left by the construction process.
Once the block has been completed and companies start to move in, they will find useful services in the local area. One example of this is shops in Aldgate that are able to offer business card printing for networking purposes.
It is hoped that the finished building can secure an ‘Outstanding’ rating through the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM).
There is also an expectation that it will attract greater footfall to the district.
