City of London Corporation approves Barbican plans

Plans for the refurbishment of the Barbican Centre are set to go ahead after the City of London Corporation opted to give the planning application the nod.

This project is being called the Barbican Renewal Programme, and it aims to ensure the long-term future of the iconic arts centre. The Barbican Centre first opened in the early 1980s, and it is considered to be among the UK’s most notable Brutalist designs. It is also the biggest multi-use arts hub in the whole of Europe, so the project to refurbish it is an important one.

When arts venues in the City of London want to promote their shows and exhibitions, Posters can be a good option. There are poster printing outlets in the local area that can provide them.

One of the improvements that will be made to the Barbican is the addition of a lift within its Conservatory. This will make it possible for visitors to reach the fly tower without walking up hundreds of steps. Another lift will be added in the foyer, so that getting to the Theatre, Concert Hall and other facilities will be easier.

The first phase of the programme will cost £231 million, of which £191 million is coming from the Corporation. The remainder will be raised through a mix of partnerships and donations.

Building works are expected to get underway next year.
