Londons Aldgate to get new cycleway

Aldgate could be set to get a brand new cycleway that would stretch from there to Blackfriars, if the multi-million pound plan is given the green light by the City of London Corporation.

The idea for this cycleway is that it would run throughout the entire central part of the City of London. Aldgate represents its easternmost fringe, while Blackfriars is the far western point, which is why they have been selected as the twin points for it.

Other connections that it would take in along the way are the Victoria Embankment (Cycleway 3), New Bridge Street (Cycleway 6) and Whitechapel High Street (Cycleway 2).

A possible design for the cycleway has now been selected by the members of City of London Corporation. The next stage in the process will be to submit that design for consultation with the general public.

Graphic design outlets in Aldgate can sometimes help when it comes to public consultations. They can supply images that show what a proposed new project would look like if built.

If it goes ahead, the construction budget for this scheme is expected to be around £4 million. The consultation is being financed by Transport for London, but match funding will be needed for approximately half of the construction costs.

The hope is that work on the building of this cycleway can start by autumn 2026.
