Redbridge plans school road closures to combat pollution

Roads nearby Redbridge schools could face closure at the beginning and end of school as part of an initiative to manage air pollution.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London has awarded Redbridge Council £200,000 to carry out an initial consultation period for a “Clean Air Zone”. The roads chosen for the first trial surround St Peter and Paul’s Primary School, located in Ilford.

The aim of this new initiative is to protect school children from traffic and air pollutants on route to and from their daily lessons. Leader of Redbridge Borough Council, Jas Athwal commented:

“It’s our absolute duty to protect our children’s health, both as a council and as part of the community ourselves and these zones will target congested areas outside of schools by cutting down on pollution caused by traffic.”

Campaigners raising awareness on important issues can make use of local printing services to create literature to inform members of the public.

Athwal called for parents to be more aware of the major pollution problem, adding that car fumes can lead to chronic illness and air around schools is subjected to large quantities at peak times.

Redbridge Council stated the project is proving popular, with local schools keen to become involved. The council’s ultimate ambition is to change the method parents use to pick up and drop off their children cutting back on school traffic and pollution.
