The structures in question are Somerset Buildings, which is situated in Church Street, and Estates Buildings, which can be found in Railway Street. Both of them hold Grade II listed status and Kirklees Council is the current owner of them. Under the proposed Plans, both buildings would see their interiors given a makeover before they are sold to housing developers.
This work to restore the two is expected to cost several million pounds. In particular, Estates Buildings will need roughly £5.6m worth of repairs made to it to ensure that it is fully protected against the elements.
According to Yorkshire Live, a report that was submitted to the council about the building says:
“Utilising Estates Buildings for residential development is an opportunity for the council to use its own heritage assets to create a high-quality product with excellent space standards.”
New flats in the town are often showcased to potential buyers or renters using colour brochure printing provided by shops based within Huddersfield.
The cash needed to repair the two buildings in this case has been found via the Heritage Action Zone, which has provided a total of £11.3m towards the renovation of them.
