Plans for a large-scale renovation and extension to a historic hotel in Huddersfield have moved a step closer to being realised, as a top heritage organisation has lent its backing to them.
Historic England has come out in support of the Plans for The George Hotel, which is situated on Commercial Street, Huddersfield. These Plans involve major work being done on the buildings, as the hotel will become a Radisson RED one that has a total of 91 rooms. The Plans involve dividing the structure up into three blocks referred to as A, B and C, with A being the main building that holds Grade II listed status.
This will be restored to its former glory and will serve as the entrance and reception area for the hotel. Building B, which is the one opposite Huddersfield Railway Station, is in too bad a condition to be saved, and so it will be knocked down and replaced with a new block.
Building C will have its outside restored but the interiors removed so the extension can be built. New hotels can advertise themselves in the local area through the use of giveaway promotional Pens from Huddersfield shops with their names and branding on them.
Emma Sharpe from Historic England stated that the Plans would preserve and revitalise one of the most important buildings in the area.
