A plan to create a brand new ‘cultural heart’ in the centre of Huddersfield that was submitted by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) has been given the nod by Kirklees Council.
This ambitious plan will see major changes made to the town centre, including the adaption of Queensgate Market Hall, a Grade II-listed building. The idea behind the ‘cultural heart’ scheme is to revitalise the Piazza in Huddersfield, which is a part of the town that covers the areas of Victoria Lane, King Street and Queensgate. The plan submitted by FCBS is expected to cost £210 million.
Kirklees Council hopes the project will bring people back to the centre of town, after the numbers using it have declined in recent times. It is part of the Huddersfield Blueprint 10-year plan that the council has unveiled to turn it into a busy and cutting-edge town centre.
The FCBS plan was shown to local people during a public consultation. Graphic Design Services in Huddersfield can help with such consultations by providing images indicating what planned new developments will look like.
FCBS intends to transform the Queensgate Market Hall into a food hall, but has stated that this work will be carried out with sensitivity.
Its plan will also see Huddersfield Library, which was designed by E.H. Ashburner back in 1940, expanded to incorporate a new museum.
