Huddersfield gallery and museum plans unveiled

The latest Plans for the creation of an art gallery and museum in Huddersfield have been unveiled, with the hope that it will become the centrepiece of the town’s cultural district.

These Plans form part of the regeneration project called Our Cultural Heart. This is the brainchild of Kirklees Council and it is the authority that has put forward these revised Plans. They would see the new gallery and museum constructed within the building that used to house the library. This is at Princess Alexandra Walk, in the centre of Huddersfield.

The building in question has Grade II listed status, but some changes would be made to it. An extension would be constructed on its northern side, while a ramp would also be added.

Inside the building, the ground floor would be used for the museum, a shop affiliated to the gallery and the reception area. There would be a cafe provided too, which would have seating for 50 people.

If these Plans go ahead, the council may wish to make use of Huddersfield shops that supply brochure printing. That would help with informing visitors about the various exhibitions and artworks on display.

The museum would be situated over two different floors, while the gallery would be on the top level.

Graham Turner from Kirklees Council stated that it could be the flagship building for the scheme.
